Project Management

We own it, strengthen it, or rescue it. Project management at Hill Dogs Consulting takes three forms:

  • Full ownership. We start as early as the idea stage and drive a project from start to finish, for organizations that need dedicated PM leadership on a specific project.
  • Augmentation. We work alongside an existing project manager as an independent check, validating vendor claims, surfacing risks, and providing accountability that internal relationships make difficult.
  • Rescue. We step in when a project has gone off track, including situations that need interim senior leadership to restore momentum and get a project across the finish line.

Situations we encounter most often:

  • No mature PM function in the organization, and a specific project needs to be owned, delivered, and handed back cleanly with no ongoing PM demands
  • Schedules slipping from scope creep, or resource problems such as matrix-managed teams with competing priorities and nobody managing the contention
  • Projects where the first job is working out why things are struggling before trying to fix them

Our approach embraces agility without requiring it dogmatically. Frequent short check-ins, incremental deliverables that can be tested and validated, and a relentless focus on unblocking the team are non-negotiable whatever the methodology. At the same time, we understand what Waterfall does well: the ability to commit to a board of directors on scope and schedule, and the discipline to get the foundation right before building on it. You cannot decide after building a four-story building that you want it to be ten.

What ties it together is the discipline we bring to every engagement. We start from what success actually looks like for this organization, right now, which is central to our Strategy and Architecture work.
